Members of the
Mohawk-Hudson Male Chorus Association (MHMCA) presented a massed
concert -- 90 men strong -- at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music
Hall on May 3. The venue, widely celebrated for its acoustics, has long
featured performing artists from around the world.
Four groups participated in the concert: the Catskill Glee Club, Hendrick Hudson Male Chorus, Mendelssohn
Club of Kingston, and guests from the Yankee Male Chorus. Each Club
performed independently in the first half of the program, and the second
half consisted of eight selections sung by all choristers. (See links
to each Club above.)
The varied program consisted of popular tunes, classical selections,
spirituals, Broadway favorites, and patriotic renditions. Hendrick’s
Crew, an a cappella group within the Hendrick Hudson Male Chorus,
made a special appearance.
The massed concert is presented biennially, and the May 3
performance was hosted by the Hendrick Hudson Male Chorus.
Men's singing groups from the region founded the Mohawk-Hudson Male
Chorus Association in 1946, and the first massed concert was presented
in 1948. The May event was the 53rd such performance since the
inception of the MHMCA. In 1974 “Brothers, Sing On!,” by Edvard Grieg,
was adopted as the organization's theme song.
