The Catskill Glee Club (male chorus) was organized in 1927. During the first concert, on May 1, 1928, a fire broke out in a nearby business district. Two members of the club, who also happened to be firemen, responded and were overcome by smoke.  The concert went on as scheduled but without the two men.

Since its founding, the Catskill Glee Club has had four conductors, nine accompanists, and five assistant accompanists. Sixteen members served in the Armed Forces and one member, who was given the Bronze Star, was killed in France in 1944. There have been 132 spring and winter concerts and over 650 road performances. Spring 2008 marks our 80th season.

Road concerts (seven to ten each year) are on Monday evenings. Two home concerts are on Tuesday nights, one in December and one in May.  Concert dress is a tuxedo, but a black suit will do in a pinch. Most of our concerts are in Greene, Ulster, Orange, and Columbia counties.

Members come from communities in the mid-Hudson Valley region. Dues are $10 per year.

Nelson G. Burhans has conducted the Catskill Glee Club since 1986 and in that position has conducted nearly 150 concerts. He joined the club during his high school years and served as baritone soloist with CGC as well as with other area choral groups.

Mr. Burhans earned his A.B. degree from Hartwick College (Oneonta, New York), where, though a history major, he had the most male leads in musical shows. He was soloist with the Concert Choir and the much-traveled Radio & TV Choir.

For over 25 years he has remained manager-conductor of a summer male chorus, which, for a week in August, performs "for the love of it." He is a past-president of the Conductors Club and served as president of the Mohawk-Hudson Male Chorus Association. He recently retired from an oil company, where he was a manager of credit and customer relations. He is single and resides in Saugerties, New York.

Day and time: Mondays, 7:30 to 10 pm
Place: First Baptist Church of Catskill, 20 West Main St., Catskill
Schedule: mid-September to mid-December, and mid-January to mid-May
